Tories Only Party to oppose funding for work on preserving our Countryside and improving our town.

Air Quality Warning...Over the last year the Liberal Democrat led council has sought to reduce the cost of council services where practicable and at the Policy and Resources Committee on the 24th July sought to use a small amount of the money saved from this year's budget to begin the work needed to bid for a new Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the Greensand Ridge, covering villages such as Ulcombe Sutton Valence and Boughton Monchelsea, and to create more nature reserves in the Borough.

We were disappointed that all of the Conservative Members voted against this proposal, and tried to put off work on this important issue. If they had succeeded the possibility of making a bid may have been lost.

It was equally dismaying that the Conservatives also opposed work on a feasibility study on a Low Emissions Zone in Stone Street, which potentially offers a way to dramatically improve air quality in a very unhealthy part of Maidstone.

Traffic ScaledFortunately the proposals were supported by all of the other parties.

Councilor Derek Mortimer Chairman of the Communities Environment and Housing committee added. This is a one off opportunity to address a very poor air quality hot spot and will not only assist Stone street, but will have positive knock on effects on other problem areas in the Borough.
