We previously reported that following sustained pressure from Liberal Democrat Councillors the Borough Council finally set up a working group to bring forward measures to improve Maidstone's dire air quality. This group, under the Chairmanship of High Street Liberal Democrat Councillor Clive English ,will deliver its full report in June, but action based on the group's work has already begun to be taken. The Council's Strategic Planning and Sustainable Transport Committee has committed the Council to prepare a detailed Development Plan Document which will support the delivery of the new Maidstone Borough Local Plan and contain strong measures to improve Air Quality .As this document will take some time to prepare the Committee has agreed that in the meantime it will adopt the technical guidance used by a number of other Local Authorities in Kent and Medway, which will allow the Council to take action to reduce air pollution.

Councillor Derek Mortimer, who is a member of the Working Group and the Strategic Planning Committee said: "The decision to adopt this widely used guidance will give Maidstone Borough Council greater powers to control and reduce air pollution, whilst we finalise our own local range of robust policies to drastically improve our environment."
