Conservative plans to introduce fortnightly rubbish collections will NOT start in Maidstone Borough this autumn. Planning for the switch was halted within hours of the new Lib Dem council taking office.

"The old Conservative council totally ignored public opposition to the scheme, and it's time for a major re-think of how we deal with our waste," says Lead Member for Environment, Tony Harwood. "We will work closely with local people to get better waste reduction, collection, and recycling services in our area." Local campaigner, Ian Chittenden adds," I'm delighted that these plans have been stopped. We can now do some research and put in place new policies that actually have public backing."
