In a recent post on the "Save Bluebell Hill" Facebook group, Conservative Cllr's Stephen Paine and Chris Garland, have accused the Liberal Democrat campaign to save Bluebell hill as a "sick stunt" in order to "raise party funds".
Cllr Tony Harwood has written a strong rebuttal:
This is mischief-making of the highest order by the Conservatives trying to distract attention from how their cabinet has been caught sneaking through the destruction of the wood.

At the last planning committee meeting the Liberal Democrat members stood fast against the Conservative-backed proposal to allow development by Tesco on countryside north of Staplehurst railway line. The refusal of planning permission was recommended by senior planning officers but Maidstone Conservatives tried to argue in favour of the development, but failed to provide a policy justification to support the application. Eventually Lib Dem Councillors framed the most persuasive argument and successfully moved and seconded refusal. This was the second time this plan had come before the committee - but once again their arguments failed. If permission had been granted it would have given a green light to further development beyond the "village envelope" and could of exposed Staplehurst's priceless rural setting to uncontrolled urban sprawl.

Campaign launched with massive show of support from local people
If the leader of Maidstone Borough Council had come down to the woods today he would have been in for a big surprise: a huge crowd of local people demanding he re-think Conservative plans to plough a road through much-loved ancient woodland.
