Ian Chittenden

Ian is 59 years of age, has lived in Maidstone with his wife and family for over 30 years, and is a senior Operations Manager with one of the countries leading construction company.

He has had many years experience of campaigning in Maidstone and has successfully fought off a number of large developments, has been involved in the fight to maintain main line rail services through Maidstone and the surrounding areas, has co-ordinated the local Lib Dems fight against back garden development/urban cramming and the Lib Dems 'cut crime' campaign.

    In response to a question raised by Lib Dem County Councillor Ian Chittenden, at the County Council meeting on Thursday 9th February, the Conservative Cabinet Member confirmed that the decision on the future of Youth Services will be decided by newly formed 'Locality Boards' (where they exist). Locality boards are informal bodies, with no requirement to allow the public to attend the meetings to listen to or join in the debates about changes to their local youth services.

    In only 4 years over two thousand (2066) trees have been removed along our tree lined roads and only a quarter (27%) replanted. Many trees have been lost as a result of strimming, which cuts and remove the bark from the main trunks resulting in disease and a slow death, in particular on verges and green areas adjacent to our roads and footpaths.

    "In recent years hundreds of trees on County Council land, in particular on verges and green areas adjacent to roads and footpaths have been cut down, with very few replaced. Many become diseased and die due to grass cutting around the base of trees with strimming tools which cut and removed the bark from the main trunks, resulting in disease and a slow death.

    The Government directs what powers are acceptable to give to PCSO's, but it is at the discretion of the Chief Constable for each County which ones are actually given, so they do vary. Kent's Chief Constable has just agreed to 12 new powers.
