Residents of Tovil and South Maidstone received excellent news on the 10th October when the Planning Inspector dismissed an appeal by Pinden Ltd against the decision by Kent County Council to refuse planning permission for a materials recycling centre on the Old Quarry at Straw Mill Hill in Tovil.
Local Lib Dem Councillors Ian Chittenden and Derek Mortimer have been working with the Tovil Parish Council, Tovil Action Group, Valley Conservation, the North Loose Residents Association and other Councillors to oppose the planning application. This was supported by the many residents who wrote letters of objections and attended the appeal hearing.
The planning appeal was held on the 13th September, and we are now delighted to be able to tell you that the Planning Inspector has advised that the appeal was dismissed. The main reason given for dismissal was:
"The adverse impacts of the proposal on the local environment, to which extent it would not respect or enhance the character and distinctiveness of the settlement and landscape, give rise to conflict with policies CC6 and BE1 of the South East Plan.
Local Lib Dem Borough Councillor for South Ward, Ian Chittenden commented:
"This was an excellent team effort. I am particularly pleased that the main reasons outlined by the Inspector concentrated on the dramatic change to Tovil Parish over the last 30 years, from a commercial paper manufacturing area to a residential area. Had the appeal been lost, it would have set back the improvement to the area that has taken place in recent years and is ongoing. Also the excellent work undertaken by Valley Conservation, helping to improve our local countryside, should not be forgotten."
