Peter Carroll, the Lib Dem Parliamentary Candidate for Maidstone & The Weald has welcomed the long awaited report from the KCC working group set up to investigate the downgrading of Maidstone Maternity. The report recommends that Kent County Council ask the Secretary of State for Health to 'call in' and review the decision.
Peter said, 'The working group has recognised that there is massive public feeling against this move. It is entirely right that this matter go to the Secretary of State for review. This is the best chance we have of stopping this decision'.
The report will be considered by KCC at a meeting on Friday 19th Feb at Sessions House, next to County Hall. The meeting is open to the public. Peter said, 'I have posted details of the meeting on the Facebook site 'Keep Full Maternity in Maidstone' and I hope that as many people as possible will come along to support those of us that want to see this matter be 'called in''.
Peter Carroll is still fighting for a meeting with the Secretary of State. He said, 'During my campaigning work on this vital issue I have amassed over 3,000 letters from members of the public personally addressed to the Health Secretary. So far, I have not found it possible to get a meeting with the Minister. On Feb 23rd, I will be going to the Department of Health with all 3,000 letters - some attached to a 100ft long banner so that the Minister see just how strong local feeling is on this issue. I will be attempting to hand the letters in to the door of the department'.
