IT'S OFFICIAL: Lib Dem Councils are greenest

October 12, 2009 1:57 PM

A independent survey for the Guardian newspaper has shown that Lib Dem Councils are the greenest.

Liberal Democrat run Councils came out ahead of Labour, with Conservative Councils bringing up the rear.

Lib Dem Environment Spokesman Steve Webb MP said:

"Liberal Democrats lead the way on environmental issues in reality not rhetoric.

"In councils up and down Britain, it is the Lib Dems that are taking action to stop climate change and to protect our environment.

"Ten years of a Labour Government has been a disappointment on green issues. All too often, the green talk has not been matched by green action.

"The Conservatives have also talked green. But their record both in government and running councils like Maidstone tell a different story."

Cllr Fran Wilson, Leader of Maidstone Council Liberal Democrat Group, said:

"Here in Maidstone the conservative administration's record on green issues is shockingly bad. They may say they are pursuing a green agenda but their actions tell a different story. For example they have voted through housing on irreplaceable ancient woodland and axed our planned new park and ride and express bus service.

"Lib Dem plans to stop climate change by taxing polluters have been welcomed by leading environmentalists. No wonder more and more people who care about green issues are switching to back Nick Clegg's Liberal Democrats."
