At the budget meeting of Maidstone Borough Council the ruling Conservative administration forced through a 4.46% increase in council tax just below the government's 5% capping level. At the same time they piled additional fees and charges on the residents of Maidstone hard hit by the recession.
Councillor Fran Wilson Leader of the Liberal Democrat opposition commented:
"It is unfortunate for Maidstone Borough that the Conservatives chose not to support our fully costed alternative budget which would have reduced the council tax rise to 3.94%. In my view every penny left with the resident counts in these hard pressed times."
Councillor Wilson went on to say:
"The opportunity missed was even greater as our budget would have prevented the need to introduce the proposed charges for the 1st residents parking permit and the introduction of Sunday parking charges in Maidstone. None of our proposals would have impacted upon other frontline services"
