Kent Trading Standards warn of mobility scam

January 29, 2009 9:00 AM

Kent Trading Standards are warning consumers to be very careful when dealing with traders at their door. Only make appointments which you genuinely want. High pressure sales in the home can be very harrowing and are becoming rife.

Recently a vulnerable victim in Maidstone received persistent telephone calls from a mobility company to the extent that she unwillingly agreed to an appointment. The Sheltered housing manager learned of this appointment and cancelled it as the Victim did not require any mobility aids. The sales man turned up despite this cancellation and spent 2 hours in the victims home attempting to sell expensive and unnecessary products to her. Fortunately the victim did not part with any cash.

However, it is not only "vulnerable" people who will fall victim to such tactics.

Should you buy goods or services in your home, make sure you understand what is being signed and that you are happy with any details provided before signing. Make sure that you are not being misled into signing a contract.

If you are unhappy with tactics employed by a doorstep trader, or need advice on your consumer rights please call 08454 04 05 06 or go to www.consumerdirect.gov.uk
