Liberal Democrat Councillor Tony Harwood who leads on Environmental issues at Maidstone Council has condemned recent serious damage to rare heathland at Weavering Heath in Maidstone. Pits have been excavated within rare lichen heath and stands of rare vegetation damaged by toxic fly tipping and subsequent rubbish fires.
Tony spent an afternoon clearing-up the worst of the mess and called in Maidstone Council cleansing staff to complete the job. It must be hoped that this rare and sensitive landscape will be given the time and space to recover from this reckless ecological vandalism. This small patch of rare heathland is a relic of a once extensive area of heathland and healthy woodland lost to construction of Grove Green residential estate.
