Lib Dems slam Conservative waste

June 21, 2007 9:59 AM

Country Hall protectConservatives at the County Council have blown millions on botched road projects, self-indulgent twinning links, and shameful mismanagement.

The biggest failure has been the £11 MILLION overspend on the re-organisation of the Kent Highways Service. The cost of this project was estimated at £6 MILLION but now it's been revealed that they've racked up spending £17 MILLION on it.

On top of this, £8 MILLION was blown through abandoning a scheme to build the Turner Contemporary Art Centre in Margate. Having wasted £8 MILLION they have now come up with a new idea to revive the plans and thrown a whopping £17.4 MILLION into the scheme.

In a final insult to local taxpayers, the Conservatives are now to fund their own TV station by taxing the elderly and vulnerable. A huge hike of 30% in charges for care for the elderly in their own homes will help fund this £1 MILLION flight of fancy.

"These numbers are difficult to imagine, but the Conservatives are just pouring our tax money down the drain," says local Lib Dem, Ian Chittenden.

"The sums are huge and particularly sickening given the cuts that are being made to caring for elderly and vulnerable people. For me it's all summed up by the £250,000 spent on fostering links with Virginia when they're cutting services for local people."
