Following the hard fought Borough Council elections, Liberal Democrats have taken back control of the Council at the Annual General Meeting held on the 16th May.
Fran Wilson, Borough Councillor for High Street Ward, has been elected both Leader of the Liberal Democrats and Leader of the Borough Council. Tony Harwood, Borough Councillor for North Ward, has been elected Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrat group and also Deputy Leader of the Council.
Fran said, "It is a great honour and a big responsibility to be the new Leader of Maidstone Borough Council. I, together with my Cabinet team and all the elected Liberal Democrat Councillors, will be working hard to fulfil the expectations of residents who placed their confidence in us.
The consultation period for the Core Strategy of the Local Development Framework has now ended. This will provide the blueprint for the Borough's future development and it will be our first priority to ensure that the final version is a document which will get the balance right between housing, economic development and the protection of our beautiful open spaces and countryside
Our second priority will be to maintain a good waste collection service and achieve a real improvement to waste minimisation and recycling across the Borough.
I am determined that we will put emphasis back on maintaining a clean and tidy Borough and continue the work to improve all our municipal parks and open spaces.
We will also work closely with our partners, such as Kent County Council, the Police and the Health Service, to provide a safe environment and improve the health and prosperity of all our residents."
