At The last local elections, the people of Maidstone gave a clear message to the Liberal Democrats that they wished to keep weekly waste collection. In contrast, the Conservative Party had already decided that they would switch to a fortnightly collection from October 2007.
With the support of the Independent councillors and one Labour councillor, your local Lib Dems were able to out-vote the Conservatives at the last full council meeting and secure weekly waste collections for the residents of this Borough.
The Liberal Democrat administration has vigorously examined the Council's budgets to drive down costs and to bring forward a package that secures the weekly collection, dramatically increases recycling and is affordable.
Conservatives councillors on the other hand, with three exceptions, chose to try and force a fortnightly collection on the residents of Maidstone by voting against this funding package.
The Conservatives have attempted to justify their position by claiming that an increase in recycling could not be achieved while keeping the weekly collection and that retaining the weekly collection with enhanced recycling was unaffordable.
Maidstone and the Weald Liberal Democrats - keeping our promises.
